Malaria and Cold Sensitivity

August 29, 2018 By Malaria Q&A Leave a Comment

Question: I contracted Malaria in October 2017. Took the medication and got better. Lately I suffer from cold sensitivity. I hardly get warm no matter the amount of clothing or blankets. Can it still be the after effects of the disease.

Answer: Chills and experiencing cold are a well-known symptom of malaria, but I can’t find any credible reports that suggest it would be a long-term consequence or based on the after effects of the disease. That said, there is an increasing body of scientific research confirming that malaria, and especially severe forms of the disease, can have longer term neurological and cognitive impacts, so it is not impossible that longer-term after-effects of malaria could be contributing to your feeling cold, though again at this point in time there is no medical or scientific evidence to support this hypothesis.
