My experience is from the military and having to go to afghanistan. I still have occasional bouts of anxiety and heart palpitations from meflaquine. my military dr’s failed to read the questionnaire they gave me and would have seen that i had a history of depression which was a contraindicator for taking the mefloquine.
Hi Sean, thanks for that comment, and for taking the survey (I hope you did!). It is a shame that you were given a contra-indicated form of prophylaxis; I hope you recover from your lasting side effects.
I did not see all the side effects listed that I experienced with the prophylactic treatment I took (Malarone). My reason for discontinuation was the watery stool/diarrhea which made the working day very difficult, especially if you are traveling around to different areas with varied levels of hygiene available, but is a well-known side effect of the drug. You may want to consider listing other side effects.
Thank you for that – we are actually trying to do a survey on malaria prophylaxis and treatment, to get a sense of what other side effects our readers have experienced. We would be very grateful if you could take a few minutes to complete this survey, which can be found by following this link: http://malaria.com/surveys/malaria-survey. Thank you!
I have asked a question on my daughter’s behalf as she does not have access to the internet in rural Uganda. I would be pleased to forward the survey

to her email so she can complete it when she is connected.
Many thanks! We would very much appreciate your daughter’s input. – Claire

This is my first time to take part in Malaria survey. It is my hope that the best drug must be produced to help reduce death from Malaria realted diseases in Malawi, more especially in children under five years of age.
In Africa specifically my country Zambia there is a lot to be done in fighting Malaria. people are dying on a daily basis because a malaria. Nothing much is being done to fight the disease. Many rural areas receive little or no sensitization on how to fight malaria. i usually have malaria twice a year and am in an urban set up. what of those in rural areas. we still have a long way to Go
Hello!
Can you please tell me how’s the situation regarding malaria in Lusaka, Zambia. I’m a tourist and I had no treatment against malaria. I’ll stay here for 3 months… Now I must admit that I’m a little worried about that!
Thanks in advance!
Malaria is present in all parts of Zambia, including Lusaka. Three different types of anti-malarial prophylaxis medication are recommended for Zambia: Atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine. Of these, you are probably most likely to be able to find doxycycline in Lusaka. The usual prophylactic dose for adults is 100mg orally, once a day, every day you remain in the malarial areas and for four weeks after you leave.
You side effects in your survey did not include “dizziness” which I found if I took Doxy without a meal. Otherwise great website – very interactive and informative. I have made an enquiry regarding if doxy is OK prophylaxis for monkey malaria in Borneo. We will spend several weeks in the jungles and up river in Sabah and Sarawak
